Creative Livelihood

Since the acting class is launching this weekend, I’ve thought a lot about right livelihood for artists and creatives.

I love teaching and sharing with other people when I feel I have something to offer. In spite of this, the class isn’t full. I’m barely gonna scrape by to recover my studio expenses which means I need to craft a bigger vision.

So the sites I searched this week have to do with business and marketing and independent living. They have to do with creating a living by doing the work you love. And some of them are focused on the transition from being an employee to owning your own business.

The Rise of the Innerpreneur is a beautiful site created by Tara Joyce.

An innerpreneur is an entrepreneur who use their business to find personal fulfillment (creatively, spiritually, emotionally) and create social change.

Every article on the site is thought provoking. Tara speaks to the whole person. Her vision is that the self is central to the business model – well it’s more than that and she says it better than I do. Give her a visit and enjoy some grokification. There are two articles on her site about the relationship between value and price. I really want to dig into these some more:

Get Paid Your Value, Not Your Price

A Pricing Approach to raise Your Consciousness

Jennifer Lee’s Right Brain Business Plan is on my list of must haves. I like just about everything Jennifer does. Be sure and check out her other sites too.

And I have to mention again The Creative Entrpreneur by Lisa Sonora Beam. I’m still working through this process and it is becoming more and more apparent that my calling and my vision is bigger than I think it is. Lisa also offers an online workshop called PowerFULL Magical Visual Journals.

Tama J. Kieves is the author of This Time I Dance: Creating the Work You Love. She has a wonderful site called Awakening Artistry. I’ve only just begun exploring here. Tama offers coaching, workshops and retreats, a newsletter, and lots of resources on her site. She’s a successful career-change artist and her story is an inspiring one.

I’ve been walking the path with my folks at The Dreaming Cafe. Sandy did a very brave thing this week. She let go of a dream that wasn’t really hers. You can read about her process of letting go here: Taking Action Leads to Clarity.

Thinking about business and entrepreneurship always triggers a spiritual quest for me. I suppose this has something to do with faith as in “taking the leap” and faith as in “beleiving in abundant possibilities”.

The spirituality that attracts me has to do with relationship and connection and communication – very similar to my creative longings. Marianne Williamson speaks to me about God in a voice that I can hear. This passage from A Return to Love is one of my favorites. I’ve decided to copy it and put it on the wall next to my bed so I can read it every morning:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

  1. Wow, Kirsten, great post. I like this new format for Friday. I am discovering sites and people I never knew existed. Can’t wait to read more at The Rise of the Innerpreneur.
The first class, the first sale, the first anything, is never what we imagine it would be. I think its absolutely wonderful, courageous and inspiring that you took this first step.
And, Marianne Williamson’s quotation “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” is one my favorites.
    Thanks, again.

    Kirsten,

It is such a pleasure to ‘meet’ you. Thank you for your kind words about my site and my writing. If there is any way that I could of be of help to you, please let me know.

I am happy to hear of your new innerpreneurial business and I want to assure you that sustainable growth is slow — the fact that you had students attend is a huge achievement for your class launch. Congratulations! If there is one thing I learned from business school it was to never expect profits from a new business in the first two years. The best thing you can do with a young business is keep your eyes clearly focused on your ultimate goals and take small strategic steps towards them.

I wish you continued happiness and growth,

    Tara Joyce

    • Hi Tara,
I’m so glad you stopped by to read this. Thank you. I am a big fan. Your blog really speaks to me about the big picture – the soul of the entrepreneural spirit. I appreciate your encouragement!!! This is whole process has been a great lesson about how to move forward with doing what you love even if you don’t know exactly how to move forward. I have no idea where this journey will lead, but – hot damn! – it is a fun time.
      Best,
      Kirsten
