My latest project is in the brainstorming phase so I thought I would toss it out here for your reaction. I would love to hear from you. I’ve decided I don’t want to do another traditional play for awhile. It’s time to explore something new. Enter – The Empty Chair Project. My hope is that this project will include many different kinds of performing and visual artists and give them the chance to explore working with a theme and making it their own
Instant Gratification: Buying Books Online I’m a book fiend. And I like immediate gratification. Which means I’m craving a Kindle, but that is the LAST investment I need to make right now. However, I can get immediate gratification from Audible.com. The only disappointment is that Audible doesn’t carry every book I want. And in order for the service to be worth its subscription, I really should be more consistent about loading my audio books onto my iPod and carrying the iPod with me
I got some good news this weekend. I’ve been cast in another play with Theatre NXS – the same company that produced Problem Child. This play is another piece from George F. Walker’s Suburban Motel Series called, Adult Entertainment. No. It isn’t about the “adult entertainment” industry. It’s about some very mixed up adults – a washed-up public defender, two cops who long ago stopped caring about the greater good, and an ex-wife who is still trying to understand why her cop-hubbie has crossed over to the dark side. The four of them together and separately have created a state of continual crisis in their lives and the audience gets to watch them try to escape the consequences by making almost every bad choice known to man and woman.Meaty stuff – with some bizarre humor thrown into the mix to spice it up
The show will be over this weekend. So it’s brainstorming day. Time to think about what comes next. This isn’t a process of decision making. It’s a process of opening to the possibilities. And it’s not a process intended to find the “next project”. It’s more of an internal temperature reading. A sensing of what form or forms of expression will move into forefront of my life. I’m thinking – poetry, poetry, poetry. I’m a bookstore prowler and a book lover. One of my favorite techniques for sparking ideas is to practice bibliomancy. Here’s how I do it
An evening in the theater will cost you three hours of your life. It’s only worth the time if your mind cracks open, your heart breaks – or you laugh so hard you snort out loud. One of my favorite acting teachers used to say, “Drama is not about the day that nothing happened!” He would scream this at us in class when we were BORING – when we were mis-handling a character’s passion with too much reason – with too much intellect, distance, sophistication or insight – when we were too rational. I can hear someone much more intellectual than me asking, “What about Waiting for Godot?” And – whoever you are – you’re right. Waiting for Godot is precisely about the day that nothing happened. That’s what makes it so heart-breaking
